When a wolf pack is sleeping, would they wake up if something is sneaking up on them?

Wolf packs leave one wolf as a lookout. This wolf will not sleep until the others are awake.

Even in deep snow, danger can come out of the forest in any direction. A bear, another Wolf, a man with a gun. A huge moose. This lone guard wolf will not sleep until the others are awake and he is given permission to sleep.

Usually. Wolves, like humans, sleep with varying degrees of alertness but their average alertness is much higher and their senses other than sight are better. Whether wolves have a sentry awake as they sleep or not, they would be very likely to wake.

The only testimony I have seen that wolves habitually have a sentry as they sleep, as opposed to one wolf happening to be awake some of the time, is the testimony of the journalist Farley Mowett, who is extremely unreliable and evidently conducted little or even none of the research he claimed that he did. Most of his major points have been contradicted by actual wolf researchers.
